Sometimes the best winter days need no plans at all

Of course, you don’t need a Christmas market or a ticketed event to enjoy Ullswater at this time of year. In fact, winter can be one of the most beautiful times to explore this quieter corner of the Lake District. Wrap up warm and head to Aira Force, where the waterfalls are often at their most impressive after autumn rain. Take a peaceful walk along the lakeshore, enjoy the views across Ullswater or venture onto the fells if the weather and conditions allow. You could even enjoy a winter cruise aboard Ullswater Steamers, subject to their seasonal timetable. And after a day in the fresh air, there’s not much better than returning to a warm, welcoming country pub for a hearty meal and a well-earned drink.

Make a festive break of it at The Royal Hotel
