Local produce

The Ullswater valley and our wonderful county is a food lovers paradise. Take a walk from the village and you’re likely to see shorthorn cattle, deer and lamb grazing the pastures of the Ullswater valley. Our menus aim to utilise this wonderful produce, offering wholesome, homemade dishes. We are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

Sunday Lunch

Sunday lunch is served every Sunday from 12 until 2.30pm.  Work up an appetite walking up Gowbarrow, or down to Aira Force waterfall, then enjoy the best local produce, lovingly prepared, served in our warm, relaxed Lakeland pub.

Our Menus

Our Head Chef Radek brings a wealth of culinary expertise to our kitchen. We believe responsibly sourced, local dishes should be affordable. Through our seasonal menus and daily specials, you are likely to find slow braised Lamb shanks, fresh Cumbrian trout, and of course our legendary homemade shortcrust pies.

Childrens menu, and a variety of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free dishes are always available.

Beer Garden

Our wonderful beer garden, (the best this side of the Pennines!) is the perfect place for post-hike drink, or whiling away a warm summer afternoon. Enjoy a pint with friends, or get competitive with a game of Giant Chess.

Local Suppliers

We aim to work with local supplies to source produce from environmentally conscious, high welfare producers – fortunately we are spoilt for choice!  Regeneratively farmed, pedigree shorthorn cattle graze just over the hill at Gowbarrow Hall farm, lovingly cared for by Sam and Claire, supply all of our mince for our burgers. We source farmed venison from Jane at Deer&Deter (you may see them just before you reach the A66), wild venison from Cumbria Wild Game is often from Matterdale forest, and Johnby Hall produces wonderful slow grown pork.

You may see Lucy’s chickens roaming around Dockray, producing eggs for our guests to enjoy at breakfast – they’re often seen roaming around our beer garden.  We grow many of our own herbs and a small amount of vegetables in our kitchen garden, which we’re working to expand to provide more produce for our guests to enjoy, with zero food miles!

Appleby Creamery, based in Eden Valley, produces an exceptional range of award-winning, handmade Cumbrian cheese which often feature in our menus.

Cumbria has a wealth of small breweries, run by people with a passion for producing some of the best ales in the world. Being a free house gives us the freedom to work with many independent breweries – real ales from Keswick, Tirril, Coniston and Cumbrian Legendary Ales all feature regularly on our bar
